Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a molten carbonate fuel cell in which the composition change with the passage of time of an electrolyte is retarded, and the electrode reaction is stabilized for a long time by using an electrolyte plate added with higher lithiated zirconia comprising Li4 ZrO4 or Li6 ZrO5 . SOLUTION: A battery is formed by arranging an anode (a fuel electrode) 11, a cathode (an air electrode) 12, and an electrolyte plate 13 for retaining an electrolyte between the electrodes 11, 12, for constituting a unit cell, and stacking a plurality of unit cells with a separator 4 interposed between them. The electrolyte plate 13 is prepared by impregnating an electrolyte to which higher lithiated zirconia is added in molten state in a porous body comprising a retaining material, inorganic fibers, and a reinforcing material. The electrolyte is a mixture of lithium carbonate and potassium carbonate. Li4 ZrO4 or Li6 ZrO5 is decomposed with the passage of time to gradually produce lithium carbonate, and electrolyte composition is stably retained.
